SMDPAS Fall 2023-Spring 2024
Studio Schedule & Explanation of Classes

Preschool Dance

Contact studio for available classes
Our extremely popular Preschool classes are open to girls and boys starting at 3 years old (sometimes age two, if third birthday is early in the dance season).  Class meets for 45 minutes each week, tuition is $65 per month, and a costume fee of $85 will be required for spring recital. Choose the day and time from the options listed above that work best with your family's schedule.  A third class may be added, if needed.

Our experienced instructors focus on rhythm, balance, flexibility, stretching through the legs, feet, arms, & hands, and basic cross-motor skills.  Much of our learning is done through age appropriate songs, games and use of props that grab and keep the interest of our youngest dancers and their developing attention spans.  We incorporate the teaching of numbers, letters, colors, shapes, opposites, left and right, and memorization skills into weekly lessons.  Freedom of movement and creativity are highly encouraged.  Classes are kept at a manageable number of students, and assistant instructors are employed to ensure structure and to create a very hands-on, one-on-one experience for every dancer.
Dancers MUST be potty-trained prior to enrollment!

Children's Tap

Children's Tap is open to girls and boys ages 5 and up.  Both beginners with little or no dance experience to intermediate level students are welcome.  Class meets for one hour each week, tuition is $70 per month, and costume fee of $85 will be required for spring recital.

Tap typically starts with a warm-up to loosen the knees and ankles and to get the blood flowing.  Younger, inexperienced tappers will drill the basics while the more advanced of the group will incorporate intricate progressions and turns into their weekly routine.  Our focus is to make sure that each and every student stays challenged but at the same time is enabled to learn what is needed within their level of skill. Innovative games and clever learning tools are often used to make classes interesting and enjoyable for all.
***Add an additional hour of Ballet or Jazz / Hip-Hop each week and pay only $30 more per month (click on the 'Tuition & Fees' tab for details).  Please make note that each class requires a separate $85 costume fee for spring recital.

Children's Ballet / Lyrical

Children's Ballet is open to girls and boys ages 5 and up, for both beginners with little or no dance experience to intermediate  level students.  Class meets for one hour each week, tuition is $70 per month, and one costume fee of $85 is required for spring recital.

At SMDPAS, Children's Ballet is classically structured, typically starting with a ballet barre warm-up, center adagio exercises to promote balance and control,  basic essential ballet steps across the studio floor, and properly ending with the traditional reverence.  Instructors focus on promoting proper placement and turn-out, stretching through legs, feet, arms, & hands, increasing flexibility, and building a ballet vocabulary.  Fun props are often incorporated and creative, innovative games are played.

Intermediate Hip-Hop

We welcome both girls and boys to join us for Jazz / Hip-Hop at SMDPAS.  Each class will meet for one hour per week, tuition is $70 per month, and costume fee of $85 will be required for spring recital.  Monday and Thursday Children's Jazz / Hip-Hop is for both beginners with little or no dance experience to intermediate primary school aged students. The Tuesday evening Intermediate class is geared specifically towards elementary school and junior high aged dancers

Children's Jazz / Hip-Hop and Intermediate Jazz / Hip-Hop typically start with a warm-up consisting of cardio, classic jazz body isolations, and exercises to develop cross-motor skills and increase flexibility.  We then progress to combinations in the center followed by essential basic steps across the studio floor.  Our goal is to expose students to various styles of jazz, but to also incorporate the basic urban rhythmic motion of Hip-Hop.  Instructors work to promote proper body placement, teach dancers to stretch through legs, feet, arms, & hands, and stress the importance of expression and attitude when performing.  We dance to fun, upbeat, age appropriate music and use creative games that make kids want to get up and move.
***Add an additional hour of Tap or Ballet each week for a total tuition of $100 per month (click on the 'Tuition & Fees' tab for details).  Please make note that each class requires a separate $85 costume fee for spring recital.

Ballet Technique

Beginner to intermediate level of ballet technique class.  Class is an hour each week and NO costume will be needed for spring recital as this is a non-performance class.  In Ballet Technique our instructors use a variety of methods including traditional ballet barre, ballet floor barre, and modern contemporary center barre in order to correct and improve the overall body placement and turn-out of our dancers.  Yoga and Pilates are often incorporated into our workout to promote strength, flexibility, and balance, and core conditioning is worked into every lesson plan.  This class is for those serious about wanting to grow as a dancer and striving to improve their technique.  Intermediate and Advanced level competition team dancers are required to attend weekly, but class is open to others that qualify.

Beginner Pointe & Intermediate Pointe

Readiness for pointe work is determined by each student’s strength, skill, and physical development, not by their age.  SMDPAS instructors will advise parents when a student has the necessary strength and maturity to go on pointe, and class may be taken only with the permission of the instructor.  Costume fee of $85 is required for spring recital.
